President/ Executive Director
Meet LaQuenna Lewis, a passionate civil rights leader and community organizer whose commitment to compassion and social change inspires all around her. Growing up in Greensboro, Alabama, and later moving to South Central Los Angeles, LaQuenna faced early challenges that shaped her resilient spirit and deepened her desire to make a difference.
At the age of 32, following the tragic loss of her children's father, she returned to Alabama, determined to embark on a path of service and healing. In 2016, she founded the nonprofit **Love Is What Love Does**, where she tirelessly advocates for food security, youth services, emergency assistance, and voter rights, positively impacting countless lives in her community.
LaQuenna's dedication to justice became particularly evident during a recent fight against systemic oppression, where she played a pivotal role in securing legal support to challenge unjust practices that threatened her community.
Despite facing significant adversities, including a devastating house fire and threats to her safety, LaQuenna remains undeterred. Her unwavering spirit and commitment to social justice exemplify the strength and resilience of a true community leader.
Our Story
Love Is What Love Does is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to uplifting the underserved communities of Alabama’s Black Belt Region. Inspired by the vision of our founder, LaQuenna Lewis, we are committed to addressing the harsh realities faced by those living in poverty.
LaQuenna’s personal experiences with homelessness and childhood malnourishment shaped her resolve to create a lifeline for those struggling with the basic necessities of life. At *Love Is What Love Does*, our mission is simple but powerful: to improve the lives of disadvantaged individuals through programs that promote growth, resilience, and community engagement.
What began as a humble monthly food distribution has quickly grown into a comprehensive network of services. Today, we provide essential support through senior and emergency assistance, disaster relief, and youth programs. Our food distribution program alone serves hundreds of residents in Hale County and beyond each month, providing much-needed nourishment and hope.
We believe that love is the driving force for change. Join us in our mission to make a meaningful impact and be a part of the love that fuels everything we do. Together, we can build a brighter future for everyone.
